Instagram Skin Care Recommendations Lack Safety Disclosures, Raising Public Health Concerns
A recent study analyzing Instagram skin care recommendations revealed a significant lack of safety disclosures, with only 17.8% of posts mentioning adverse effects, risks, or the need to consult a physician. The study, which focused on U.S.-based profiles with over 20,000 followers, found that board-certified dermatologists accounted for only 26.7% of product recommendation posts. Even among posts by dermatologists, 61.1% lacked safety information. This widespread omission of crucial safety details, despite the high engagement and influence of these accounts, poses a growing public health concern. The analysis included both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription products, highlighting a systemic issue across various types of skin care recommendations on the platform.
