FDA Approves First Once-Monthly Subcutaneous Olanzapine Injection for Schizophrenia
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for Weltruza (olanzapine extended-release injectable suspension), marking it as the first and only once-monthly subcutaneous injectable olanzapine for adults diagnosed with schizophrenia. This new formulation offers doses of 318 mg, 425 mg, and 531 mg, which correspond to daily oral olanzapine doses of 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg, respectively. The approval was based on the positive results from the phase 3 SOLARIS trial. This trial involved 675 adults, aged 18 to 64, who were randomized over an 8-week period to receive one of three monthly doses or a placebo. The study demonstrated statistically significant symptom improvement in patients receiving Weltruza compared to those on placebo. Teva, the manufacturer, highlighted that this product eliminates the need for loading doses, oral supplementation, or post-injection monitoring, a common requirement for other extended-release olanzapine formulations.
