Toddler's Rare Genetic Condition Reveals Hidden Health Challenges
Samantha Clark, an occupational therapist from Malta, New York, has shared the story of her 17-month-old daughter, Poppy, who appears healthy but is living with Ataxia-Telangiectasia (A-T). This rare genetic disorder affects balance, coordination, the immune system, and increases cancer risk. Despite looking perfectly healthy, Poppy requires weekly antibody infusions due to her body's inability to produce enough antibodies. The condition has already begun affecting her mobility, and she faces an increased risk of chronic lung disease, lymphoma, and leukemia. The disorder, which affects between one in 40,000 and one in 100,000 people worldwide, typically worsens over time, often leading to wheelchair dependency and serious complications. Clark and her husband discovered they both carry the ATM gene mutation linked to A-T, which also increases cancer risk in carriers.
