Frontex and World Customs Organization Collaborate to Combat Cash Smuggling in Southeast Europe
Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, has partnered with the World Customs Organization (WCO) to address the smuggling of undeclared cash and valuables in Southeast Europe. This collaboration, known as the Balkans Action Days, took place from July 20 to 24, 2026, involving countries such as Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia. The operation resulted in the detection of significant amounts of undeclared cash and valuables, including EUR 221,770, USD 20,000, TRY 100,000, and 2.02 kg of silver jewelry. Frontex officers supported national authorities in searching passenger baggage, showcasing the agency's expertise in cross-border crime beyond its usual scope. Despite a decrease in cash usage across the EU, cash smuggling remains prevalent due to its anonymity and ease of transport, often linked to illegal activities such as drug trade and human trafficking.
