Record Drought and Water Scarcity Impact U.S. and Global Agriculture
A record-setting drought is currently affecting over 60% of the continental United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Integrated Drought Information System. This water crisis is part of a broader global issue, with the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health declaring a 'global water bankruptcy.' Agricultural commodities like cotton, which require significant water resources, are particularly impacted. For instance, producing 1 kilogram of cotton fabric can consume approximately 9,000 cubic meters of water. Geopolitical conflicts and trade disruptions, such as those in Iran and Ukraine, are further complicating supply chains, forcing companies to source materials from regions with less efficient water use. Kilimo, a climate tech company, is working to address these challenges by providing farmers with data-driven solutions to improve irrigation efficiency and reduce water waste.
