Global Per Capita Carbon Dioxide Emissions Plateau Since 2013, Study Reveals
A recent analysis highlights that global per capita carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels peaked in 2013 and have since plateaued. This trend is attributed to a balance between increasing per capita GDP and reductions in energy and carbon intensity. The study, which examines data from 78 countries, reveals that 57 countries have seen a decline in per capita emissions, while 12 countries continue to experience rising emissions. The economies of large, industrializing nations like China, India, and Vietnam heavily rely on coal, contributing to their ongoing emissions. The study underscores the importance of wealth and high energy consumption in achieving emissions reductions, with energy and carbon intensity improvements being crucial for future decarbonization efforts.
