Cohen highlights that unlike traditional search engines, AI chatbots are cloud services that can be linked to various personal identifiers, including accounts, devices, email addresses, and IP addresses. He explains that the conversational nature of chatbots encourages users to provide more context and personal details, treating them like private advisors. This oversharing can create a much richer and more sensitive data record than a typical search query, revealing thoughts, worries, and intentions. Even when AI tools are embedded within search bars, the underlying data retention policies and privacy settings of the operating company determine how this information is stored and potentially used for product improvement, safety, or legal compliance.
