Finland's Onkalo Repository Passes Safety Assessment, Paving Way for Nuclear Waste Disposal
Finland's Onkalo spent nuclear fuel (SNF) repository has passed a critical safety assessment by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK), moving closer to obtaining an operating license. The facility, owned by Posiva, is designed to store spent fuel from Finland's nuclear power plants using a system of engineered and natural barriers. The assessment evaluated the repository's long-term safety, considering potential environmental impacts over 100,000 to 1 million years. STUK concluded that the facility meets safety requirements, allowing Finland's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment to prepare a proposal for the operating license.
