World Bank Group Funds Water Security and Sanitation Improvements in Brazil's Paraíba State
The World Bank Group is providing $50 million in financing through the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to Brazil's Paraíba State. This funding aims to enhance water security and expand access to resilient water and sanitation services. The project addresses two main challenges: establishing institutional and infrastructure foundations for water resource management in a changing climate, and closing service gaps in urban and rural areas. Paraíba, located in Brazil's Northeast, is one of the country's poorest states and frequently experiences droughts, which now occur approximately every two years. Nearly half of the state's population lives in poverty, and climate-driven water scarcity exacerbates social and economic inequality.
