West Seattle Officials Propose Ban on Algorithmic Grocery Pricing to Protect Consumers
Mayor Katie Wilson and citywide Councilmembers Alexis Mercedes Rinck and Dionne Foster have introduced a proposal to ban the use of algorithmic pricing in large grocery stores and chains in West Seattle. The proposed legislation aims to prevent retailers from using personal data such as employment status, race, gender, and online activity to set different prices for different customers. The initiative, known as the Fair and Transparent Pricing policy, seeks to ensure that prices are clearly posted and publicly available, while still allowing conventional discounts for seniors, veterans, and other groups. This move is in response to concerns that personal data is being used to maximize prices for consumers.
