Virginia Voters Express Alarm Over Soaring Electric Bills, Merger of NextEra and Dominion Under Review
A recent poll of Virginia voters reveals widespread concern over rising electric bills, with nearly two-thirds of respondents stating their bills are too high. The poll, conducted for clean energy advocates, identified growing energy demand, monopolistic utilities, and profit-driven power companies as the primary culprits. Eight out of ten respondents, across political affiliations, believe state lawmakers should prioritize addressing these rising costs. This public anxiety coincides with the State Corporation Commission's review of Florida-based NextEra Energy's $67 billion proposal to acquire Dominion Energy. This potential merger, which would create the nation's largest electric utility, is a significant point of contention, with a decision expected by January. Despite the merger's scale, three out of four voters were largely unaware of it, though opposition significantly increased after they were presented with details.
