Study Reveals Post-COVID-19 Seasonality Shifts in Respiratory Viruses Among Children in Iran
A recent study conducted in Hamedan Province, Iran, has identified significant shifts in the seasonality of respiratory viruses among hospitalized children post-COVID-19. The research, which spanned from April 2023 to March 2024, focused on children aged 0-5 years who were hospitalized with acute respiratory symptoms. The study utilized multiplex real-time PCR to detect the presence of influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2. Findings indicated that influenza peaked in autumn, RSV in winter, and SARS-CoV-2 in spring. The study also noted a low rate of co-infections and a reduced activity of RSV, suggesting potential ecological and immunological shifts. These results underscore the need for sustained virus-specific surveillance and recalibrated vaccination strategies, particularly in resource-limited pediatric settings.
