Louisiana Midterm Primaries: Key Contests and Trump's Influence on GOP
Louisiana voters are participating in a revamped state primary system to decide the political fate of several key positions, including a Republican U.S. senator targeted by President Trump. The primary, which includes contests for the U.S. Senate, state Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, and state school board, is significant as it reflects the ongoing influence of President Trump within the Republican Party. Senator Bill Cassidy, who is seeking a third term, faces a primary challenge from state Treasurer John Fleming and U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow, the latter endorsed by Trump. The primary system has been altered from a jungle primary to separate party primaries, a change that was legislated in 2024 but only implemented in 2026. This election also includes five proposed state constitutional amendments. The U.S. House races, initially postponed due to a Supreme Court decision on the congressional map, will not have their votes counted in this primary.
