Sisters Residents Evacuate as Akawa Butte Fire Scorches Over 26,000 Acres
The Akawa Butte Fire, ignited by lightning on Thursday, has rapidly grown to over 26,000 acres, prompting evacuations in Sisters, Oregon. Residents in the northern part of the town are under Level 1 'Be Ready' evacuation notices, while areas further north face Level 2 and Level 3 warnings. The wildfire, burning in Deschutes and Jefferson counties, has created apocalyptic conditions, with ash falling and fears of further spread. Approximately 1,000 firefighters are battling the blaze, supported by Portland Fire and Rescue teams. The fire's complexity, driven by challenging terrain and unpredictable behavior, has already destroyed one home northeast of Sisters. Local events, including the Hoodoo Challenge and Sisters Farmers Market, have been canceled for safety reasons. Community efforts are underway to support first responders and affected residents.
