Texas School Choice Program Sees High Demand Amidst Controversy
The Texas Comptroller's Office has announced that nearly a quarter of a million students are eligible for the new Texas Education Freedom Accounts, a taxpayer-funded school choice program. The program, with a budget of $1 billion, aims to provide financial support for students attending private schools. Of the 274,183 applications received, 247,032 were deemed eligible. The program prioritizes low- and middle-income students with disabilities, with funding expected to cover about 100,000 students in its first year. The initiative has sparked debate, with supporters highlighting increased educational options and critics arguing it undermines public education by subsidizing private schooling.
