Dolomite Products Company Fined $135,000 for Blasting Incident Affecting Public Park
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has imposed a $135,000 fine on Dolomite Products Company Inc. following a blasting incident at their Penfield quarry on September 15, 2025. The blast propelled 22 rocks into the nearby Penfield Town Park, causing damage to a children's playground, a pickleball court, and a vehicle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The DEC's investigation revealed multiple factors contributing to the incident, including previously blasted rocks, an undetected void, non-vertical drill holes, and angular joints in the rock face. Dolomite has paid $105,000 of the fine immediately, with the remaining $30,000 suspended contingent on compliance with DEC regulations.
