Civil Rights Agencies Urge EEOC to Maintain Workforce Demographic Reporting Requirements
Eight civil rights enforcement agencies, including those from Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and the District of Columbia, have jointly submitted comments to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). They are urging the EEOC to preserve federal requirements for workforce demographic data reporting, specifically opposing the proposed rescission of Equal Employment Opportunity workforce reporting requirements, including the EEO-1 report. This report mandates that many employers submit data on the racial, ethnic, and gender composition of their workforce. The agencies argue that eliminating these federal requirements could weaken discrimination enforcement efforts and create a complex and inconsistent set of state and local rules for employers. Instead of rescinding the system, they advocate for its modernization where appropriate. The EEOC has not yet announced when it will make a final decision on the proposed rule change.
