Turkish Coastguard Reports 18 Migrant Deaths After Boat Sinks in Aegean Sea
The Turkish coastguard has reported that at least 18 people have died after an inflatable boat carrying migrants sank near the western province of Mugla, Turkey. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when the boat, equipped with an outboard motor, was detected off the coast of Mugla’s Bodrum district. Despite repeated warnings, the boat attempted to flee, ultimately taking on water due to adverse sea and weather conditions, leading to its sinking. Search and recovery operations are ongoing, with a helicopter and three boats dispatched to the area. So far, 21 individuals have been rescued. The Aegean Sea is a well-known transit route for migrants attempting to reach Europe from North Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey, which hosts millions of refugees from Syria and Iraq.
