South Florida Wildfires Burn Over 5,900 Acres Amid Containment Efforts
Two significant wildfires in South Florida have burned thousands of acres in the Everglades, with fire crews working to contain the blazes. According to the Florida Forest Service, the larger fire has scorched approximately 5,600 acres (2,300 hectares) southwest of Fort Lauderdale and is currently 30% contained. A smaller fire in southern Miami-Dade County, near Homestead, has affected 300 acres (120 hectares) and is also 30% contained. Both fires have created smoky conditions, reducing visibility in the affected areas. The National Guard has joined state and local firefighters in containment efforts. Fortunately, no serious injuries or property damage have been reported so far. Dry conditions in the region have contributed to the rapid spread of the fires, which follow a series of destructive wildfires in southern Georgia last month.
