Florida Judge Blocks Amendment 3 from Ballot Due to Misleading Language
A Leon County judge has ruled that the language of Florida's Amendment 3 is misleading, preventing its inclusion in the upcoming November election. The amendment, titled 'Save Our Homes from Excessive Property Taxes,' was criticized for being a political slogan rather than a neutral description. The proposal, approved by the Republican-controlled Legislature, aimed to increase the homestead exemption for nonschool property taxes to $250,000 over two years. Opponents argue that this could force local governments to raise other taxes or cut funding for services. Former state Sen. Jeff Brandes, a plaintiff in one of the lawsuits challenging the amendment, hailed the ruling as a victory for ballot integrity. Judge David Frank noted that the amendment could reduce local property tax bases, affecting funding for core services. The Florida Sheriffs Association expressed concerns about potential impacts on law enforcement response times.
