Obama Presidential Center Set to Open on Juneteenth, Aiming to Boost Chicago's South Side
The Obama Presidential Center, a sprawling 19.3-acre campus located on Chicago's South Side, is set to open to the public on June 19, coinciding with Juneteenth. The $850 million project, privately managed by the Obama Foundation, features museum exhibits chronicling the political journey of former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, alongside contemporary art installations, athletic facilities, and a branch of the Chicago Public Library. Unlike other presidential libraries, it is not operated by the National Archives and Records Administration, allowing for more flexibility in presentation and funding. The center aims to serve as an economic catalyst for the surrounding community by employing local contractors and attracting new investments.
