Bundeswehr Contracts Rheinmetall for FV-014 Loitering Munition to Enhance Defense Capabilities
The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, has signed a framework contract with Rheinmetall for the procurement of the FV-014 loitering munition. Announced on April 22, 2026, the contract is valued in the billions of euros, with an initial call-off worth EUR300 million. The agreement includes an option for tens of thousands of these autonomous reconnaissance and strike unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The FV-014 system, which combines reconnaissance and strike capabilities, is designed to protect forces and engage critical targets effectively. It features a 4 kg warhead and can operate within a 100 km range, remaining airborne for up to 70 minutes. The German Federal Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Bundestag's budget committee approved this procurement on April 15, 2026.
