Study on Basic Income for Homeless in California Shows Mixed Results
A study conducted by the University of Southern California's Homelessness Policy Research Institute, in collaboration with Miracle Messages, examined the effects of providing a basic income to homeless individuals in California. The study involved 103 participants who received $750 monthly for a year, compared to a control group who did not receive the payments. The research aimed to determine if this financial assistance could help participants secure long-term housing. While nearly half of the recipients found housing, a similar proportion of the control group also secured housing, indicating that the payments did not significantly alter housing outcomes. However, the funds were primarily used for essential needs such as food, transportation, and healthcare, with minimal spending on alcohol or drugs.
