European Regulator Approves Eye Implant to Restore Vision in Age-Related Blindness
A retinal implant, known as the PRIMA implant, has been approved for use by a European regulator, marking a significant advancement in the treatment of geographic atrophy, a severe form of vision loss associated with age-related macular degeneration. Developed by Science Corporation in Alameda, California, the implant is designed to restore functional central vision, allowing individuals to read and recognize faces. The device, about the size of a pinhead, is inserted beneath the retina and works in conjunction with high-tech glasses equipped with a frame-mounted camera. This system captures images and projects them onto the implant using near-infrared light, which is then converted into electrical pulses to stimulate neurons in the retina. The PRIMA implant has shown promising results, improving visual acuity in about 80% of cases in a small study. It has received Breakthrough Device and Humanitarian Use Device designations from the FDA, paving the way for potential approval in the United States.
