UN Delegation in Lebanon Explores Border Options Post-UNIFIL Withdrawal
A United Nations delegation visited Lebanon to assess options for the southern border area with Israel following the scheduled end of the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, in 2026. The delegation, representing the 15 members of the UN Security Council, met with Lebanese officials, including Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, who emphasized the need for a follow-up force to fill the security vacuum. UNIFIL has been instrumental in maintaining peace in the region since its deployment nearly five decades ago, particularly following conflicts such as the Israel-Hezbollah war. The delegation's visit included discussions on implementing UN Security Council resolution 1701, which was pivotal in ending the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war and the recent 14-month conflict.
