Brooklyn Opens Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center, Enhancing Community Facilities
The Shirley Chisholm Recreation Center, designed by Studio Gang, has officially opened in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. This 74,000-square-foot facility, located within Nostrand Playground, includes an indoor pool, basketball court, gym, media lab, and outdoor spaces. The center, named after Shirley Chisholm, the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress, is the first of its kind in Central Brooklyn and the first new citywide recreation center in 15 years. It offers low-cost memberships to all New Yorkers, with free access for those under 24. The center features artworks by citizen artist Vanessa German and includes a community museum. The project was part of New York City's 'Design-Build' initiative, which aims to expedite public projects.
