Yale Researchers Discover Heart's Intrinsic Nervous System Role in Stress Protection
Researchers at Yale University have uncovered new insights into the intrinsic cardiac nervous system, a network of neurons embedded in the heart's fat pad. This system plays a crucial role in maintaining steady heartbeats, especially during extreme stress. The study, conducted on mice, identified two distinct neuronal subtypes within this system. One subtype, Npy+ neurons, was found to regulate heart rate, while the other, Ddah1+ neurons, appeared to protect the heart from stress-induced damage. The findings challenge the traditional view that all cardiac neurons function similarly and could lead to improved treatments for heart disease.
