Pirates Hijack Tanker Off Somalia Amid Rising Gas Prices
A small product tanker, Honour 25, has reportedly been hijacked off the coast of Somalia. The tanker, registered in Palau, was seized by pirates and taken to an anchorage off the northern Somali coast. The incident was first reported by the BBC, citing multiple security officials. The ship was boarded by six armed individuals, with five more joining later, and is now anchored between Xaafun and Bander Beyla. The crew of 17, from various countries including Pakistan, Indonesia, and India, are being held on board. The hijacking occurs amid rising gasoline prices in Somalia, exacerbated by the ongoing U.S./Israeli conflict with Iran, making the tanker a valuable target if it carries fuel. This incident is part of a series of piracy activities in the region, with EUNAVFOR Atalanta tracking multiple incidents this year.
