Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's Order 2023 Upheld by Court, Accelerating Clean Energy Integration
The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of the Sierra Club, affirming the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's (FERC) issuance of Order 2023. This order mandates grid operators to address delays in interconnection queues, which have hindered the integration of clean energy projects into the electricity grid. The order aims to reform grid operator processes to prioritize clean energy sources such as wind, solar, and batteries. The Sierra Club has been a staunch defender of this order, which seeks to alleviate the backlog of projects waiting to connect to the grid, 95% of which are renewable energy projects. Despite the progress, some grid operators have attempted to bypass these reforms with 'fast track' processes that favor fossil fuels, a practice the Sierra Club continues to challenge.
