Japan Arrests Six Individuals in $580,000 Cryptocurrency Laundering Case
Japanese police have arrested six individuals in connection with an alleged cryptocurrency money laundering operation totaling approximately 91 million yen ($580,000). The suspects are accused of laundering proceeds from investment fraud, with investigators examining transactions linked to around 30 victims across Japan. Among those arrested are Keisuke Tanaka, 36, president of the temporary staffing company Weather, and Yusuke Shibuya, 45, a Tokyo resident. Authorities allege that the group used Weather's corporate bank account to receive money from investment scams, then converted these funds into cryptocurrency through overseas channels, making it difficult to trace the original source. The arrests specifically concern the suspected concealment of 4.4 million yen that entered the company’s bank account on February 16, 2024, though police are investigating whether the operation handled the larger sum between February and March 2024. The company itself is scheduled for referral to prosecutors.
