Oklo Inc. has announced that its Groves Isotope Test Reactor has achieved first criticality, marking a significant milestone in the U.S. nuclear energy sector. This achievement comes less than a year after the groundbreaking of the reactor, which was developed under the U.S. Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program. The Groves reactor, built on private land, is the first of its kind to reach criticality on a greenfield site. This project demonstrates the potential for rapid deployment of nuclear technology, with timelines measured in months rather than years. The reactor is part of Oklo's broader efforts to establish domestic isotope production capabilities and advance nuclear fuel recycling technologies.
