Severe COVID-19 Infections May Reactivate Dormant Viruses, Leading to Long-Term Health Issues
Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have found that severe COVID-19 infections can reactivate dormant viruses, potentially leading to worse clinical outcomes and long-term conditions such as autoimmune diseases and long COVID. The study, published in Nature, analyzed data from 1,154 hospitalized COVID-19 patients and identified the reactivation of viruses like Epstein-Barr virus and cytomegalovirus. The research highlights the complex interactions between COVID-19 and other chronic viral infections, suggesting that these reactivations could contribute to the severity of COVID-19 and its long-term effects.
