National Weather Service Issues Critical Fire Weather Alerts Across Five States
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued 'critical fire weather condition' warnings, also known as red flag warnings, across five states due to a dangerous combination of heat, strong winds, and extremely dry air. These conditions are expected to fuel fast-moving wildfires. The alerts cover large parts of the Northern Plains and interior Alaska, specifically targeting North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Montana, and Alaska’s Delta Junction area. The warnings are in effect as these regions are experiencing high winds, low humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures, which are conducive to rapid fire spread. Wind speeds are anticipated to range from 15 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph, and humidity levels could drop as low as 10 to 20 percent.
