Researchers Uncover Brain's Ability to Regenerate Astrocytes After Localized Loss
A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich has revealed the brain's capacity to regenerate astrocytes following localized loss. The study, published in Nature Neuroscience, utilized a mouse model to mimic the loss of astrocytes associated with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), an autoimmune condition. Researchers employed advanced imaging techniques, including longitudinal in vivo two-photon microscopy, to observe the brain's response to the targeted loss of astrocytes in the somatosensory cortex. They discovered that nearby cells began to multiply and form new astrocytes, eventually repopulating the damaged area. This process involved the temporary formation of multinucleated astrocytes, which extended branches into the depleted regions, facilitating the regeneration of the astrocyte network.
