Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency Identifies Remains of U.S. Soldier from Korean War
The remains of U.S. Army Sgt. Celestino Chavez, who was killed during the Korean War, have been identified 75 years after he went missing. Chavez was wounded while defending his position near the Chosin Reservoir in Korea in 1950, a site of intense battles between UN and Chinese Communist Forces. Despite his injuries, Chavez refused evacuation and continued to fight until he collapsed from blood loss. Efforts to recover and identify bodies from the battle have been ongoing, with approximately 7,500 U.S. troops still unaccounted for from the Korean War. In 2018, North Korea returned 55 boxes believed to contain the remains of American service members, which the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has been analyzing for further identifications.
