U.S. Space Force Increases Launch Contract Ceiling to $17 Billion Amid Rising Satellite Demand
The U.S. Space Force has significantly increased the ceiling of its National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1 contract from $5.6 billion to $17 billion. This adjustment reflects the military's preparation for a substantial rise in satellite missions. The contract, which runs through fiscal 2029, allows seven companies, including SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, and Blue Origin, to compete for task orders. These companies are part of the Lane 1 vendor pool, which focuses on commercial-style missions that do not require the extensive certification and mission-assurance procedures reserved for the military's most complex satellites. The increase in the contract ceiling is designed to accommodate the growing demand for satellite launches and to foster competition by allowing newer providers to enter the national security market once they demonstrate sufficient readiness.
