Pittsburgh Faces Increasing Extreme Weather Events
Pittsburgh and the state of Pennsylvania are experiencing a significant rise in extreme weather events, including tornadoes, flash flooding, and heat waves. According to the National Weather Service, Pennsylvania has recorded 48 tornadoes so far in 2026, with 24 occurring in the Greater Pittsburgh area, making it the second-most active year for tornadoes since 1950 (Next Pittsburgh, 2026-09-10). Additionally, Pittsburgh experienced its third-wettest August on record, with 7.62 inches of rainfall. Experts attribute these changes to a combination of human-caused warming and other atmospheric factors, which are intensifying weather patterns and extending extreme weather seasons.
