Gary and Portage Residents Face Prolonged Power Outages After Derecho
Following the August 11 derecho, tens of thousands of residents in Gary and Portage, Indiana, remain without power. Gary has been particularly affected, with 23,959 residents still experiencing outages as of 1:30 p.m. on August 19, 2026. NIPSCO, the local utility provider, has not yet provided an estimated restoration time for these areas. The storm caused widespread damage, including fallen trees and blocked roads, with 75% of reported road blockages now cleared. Local authorities and organizations, including AT&T and Verizon Wireless, have stepped in to provide resources such as charging stations, WiFi access, and food distribution points. Gary and Portage are also offering medical oxygen cylinder refills and hosting community events to support recovery efforts. The city of Portage has described the damage as comparable to a hurricane.
