Former New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy Secured $766.5 Million Federal Funding for Portal North Bridge Project

The funding supports the construction of a new modern two-track, high-level, fixed-span bridge over the Hackensack River. This new bridge will rise 50 feet, allowing marine traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail traffic, a significant improvement over the existing 116-year-old Portal Bridge. The project is primarily funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the state of New Jersey, and Amtrak. NJ Transit and Amtrak are currently in the final phase of cutover work, transferring the final track from the old bridge to the new one, with full service expected to resume on the new bridge by November 15, subject to safety testing.
