Connecticut Attorney General William Tong Connects with Immigrant Community at Sanctuary Kitchen Event
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong recently visited Sanctuary Kitchen’s commercial kitchen in New Haven, where he shared a meal and connected with immigrant women participating in the culinary training program. The event highlighted the program's role in supporting immigrant women, including Razia Assadi, a recent valedictorian from Metropolitan Business Academy, and her mother, Homa, who now supervises at Sanctuary Kitchen after completing the program. Tong, himself the child of immigrants, shared personal anecdotes about growing up in his parents' Chinese restaurant, drawing parallels with the experiences of the women at Sanctuary Kitchen. Culinary Director Aminah Alsaleh, an immigrant from Syria, and Rawaa Ghazi from Iraq, both praised the program for providing opportunities and a welcoming community. The lunch featured dishes like chicken shawarma, muhammara, Nepali dumplings, and Iraqi tea, fostering a cultural exchange and emphasizing the shared journeys of immigrant families.
