Marine Lance Cpl. Marshall Martinez Alerts Occupants During Okinawa Hotel Fire
Lance Cpl. Marshall Martinez, a 25-year-old Marine from Fillmore, California, heroically entered a burning hotel in Chatan, Okinawa, to alert sleeping occupants. The incident occurred in the early hours of August 15, when Martinez, walking home with his girlfriend, noticed flames engulfing the Hotel Hamby Resort. Despite bystanders recording the event, Martinez prioritized action, pounding on doors and shouting to evacuate people. He observed approximately 10 individuals safely leaving the hotel before he exited and contacted emergency services. His attention was then drawn to a flashlight in a window, indicating someone might still be inside. Martinez and other bystanders attempted to reach the person through the window but were forced back by intense smoke and heat. They then resorted to ripping off a wall with the help of local police, allowing firefighters to enter and rescue an unconscious 55-year-old man. The fire was fully extinguished by 7:19 a.m., and its cause remains under investigation.
