Mississippi Declares Fall Severe Weather Prep Week
Governor Tate Reeves has declared October 12-17, 2026, as Fall Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Mississippi. This initiative aims to encourage residents to prepare for the state's secondary severe weather season, which typically occurs from October through December. In 2025, Mississippi experienced 80 tornadoes, with seven occurring during this period. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is collaborating with the National Weather Service to provide resources and information on severe weather hazards, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flash flooding. Each day of the week will focus on a specific preparedness theme, such as making emergency plans, ensuring access to weather warnings, and reviewing insurance policies.
