University of Arkansas System Remembers Former President B. Alan Sugg, Who Passed Away at 88
B. Alan Sugg, the former president of the University of Arkansas System, passed away on Saturday at the age of 88. Sugg served as president from 1990 to 2011, marking the longest tenure in the university's modern history. During his leadership, the UA System experienced significant growth and expansion, increasing from approximately 30,000 students across five campuses in 1990 to over 70,000 students and 18,000 employees across 17 campuses, divisions, and units by 2011. Under his guidance, the system awarded more than 150,000 degrees and completed $2 billion in facility expansion. His tenure saw the addition of five community colleges, the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, the Criminal Justice Institute, the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, and the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute.
