North Carolina Prison Faces Scabies Outbreak and Treatment Concerns
Neuse Correctional Institution in Goldsboro, North Carolina, has experienced a scabies outbreak, with at least two confirmed cases in July and numerous other incarcerated men reporting intense itching and skin bumps. The outbreak led to a delayed and, according to some inmates, inadequate response from prison officials. Initially, some men were misdiagnosed with conditions like allergic reactions or folliculitis. The N.C. Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) communications director, Keith Acree, confirmed that after one man was diagnosed at a local hospital, the prison began screening and evaluating its population. Treatment for affected dorms involved permethrin cream and environmental cleaning, but some men reported receiving only a single dose, despite recommendations for a second application.
