AI-Powered Romance Scams Become More Sophisticated, Posing Greater Challenges for Detection
AI is making online romance scams increasingly difficult to detect and easier to scale, according to Fangzhou Wang, an assistant professor of criminology and criminal justice at the University of Texas at Arlington. Scammers are now leveraging generative AI to create convincing messages, realistic images, and even deepfake technology for video and voice chats, making traditional red flags like poor grammar obsolete. These scams have evolved from simple money requests to industrialized operations, often luring victims into fraudulent investment platforms, particularly involving cryptocurrency. The FBI recently extradited six men accused of conning over 100 U.S. women out of more than $6 million, highlighting the organized nature of these crimes.
