France Battles Wildfires Amidst Extreme Heatwave, Evacuations Continue
France is grappling with severe wildfires in the Gironde region, exacerbated by a heatwave with temperatures reaching 40°C. Over 220,000 people have been evacuated, many from popular coastal resorts. Firefighters, supported by European partners, are working to control the fires, which have burned an area four times the size of Paris. The situation remains precarious as high temperatures and winds threaten to reignite the flames. Meanwhile, Spain has lifted some evacuation orders as conditions improve, but remains on alert for further heatwaves.
