Laramie County School District 1 Implements $2,500 Fine for Teacher Contract Breaches, Updates Equipment Policy
The Laramie County School District 1 Board of Trustees in Cheyenne, Wyoming, has approved significant changes to its policies, including a new $2,500 liquidated damages fee for teachers who break their contracts early without board approval. According to LCSD1 Finance Director Jed Cicarelli, this fee is not intended as a punitive measure but rather to cover costs incurred by the district due to sudden departures, such as recruitment expenses, administrative time, long-term substitute costs, and staffing disruptions. District Superintendent Stephen Newton noted that sudden teacher turnover is a frequent issue, sometimes occurring just days before the school year begins. Additionally, the district updated its equipment take-home policy.
