CDC Reports Drug-Resistant Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Backyard Poultry
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a salmonella outbreak affecting at least 34 individuals across 13 states, linked to contact with backyard poultry. The outbreak, which occurred between February 26 and March 31, has resulted in 13 hospitalizations. Notably, over 40% of those affected are children under the age of five. The CDC has identified that some of the salmonella strains involved are resistant to common antibiotics, posing a significant health risk. Backyard poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, are known carriers of salmonella, which can lead to severe illness if transmitted to humans. The CDC has been investigating similar outbreaks in recent years, including a significant one in 2025 that affected over 500 people across 48 states.
