Richmond District Residents Protest Proposed Safeway Redevelopment Project
Residents of San Francisco's Richmond District gathered at a town hall meeting to express strong opposition to a proposed eight-story Safeway redevelopment project at 850 La Playa St. near Ocean Beach. The project, which would replace the current 55-year-old Safeway building and its parking lot with a 562-unit complex, is being developed by Align Real Estate in partnership with Safeway's parent company. Neighbors, including architectural historian Bridget Maley of Neighborhoods United, argue that the project is too large, too tall, and out of scale for the neighborhood. They contend that state streamlining laws, which the developer is utilizing, circumvent public hearing requirements and discretionary approval by government agencies, effectively silencing local residents' voices. The town hall, organized by the Planning Association for the Richmond, did not include developers or public officials, highlighting the residents' frustration with the lack of traditional avenues for input.
