University of Cincinnati Researchers Discover Humidity's Role in Insect Biological Clocks
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have uncovered that humidity can act as a biological clock for certain insects, such as kissing bugs, fruit flies, mosquitoes, and spider beetles. The study, published in the journal Biological Timing and Sleep, was conducted in a controlled environment where both climate and light were regulated. The insects adjusted their behavior to changes in humidity, continuing to follow these patterns even after the humidity cycle was removed. This research, supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, suggests that while light and temperature are well-known factors in synchronizing biological clocks, humidity also plays a significant role, albeit less strongly than light or temperature.
